Why This Reference Exists
Printed directories are now historical sources, while records that identify an owner or document a past household belong to different custodians. The Kanawha County Assessor maintains property data, the County Clerk records deeds and local vital events, and the West Virginia Secretary of State manages election tools. Kanawha County Public Library and the State Archives preserve older directories, newspapers, and county microfilm. Bringing verified links, office contacts, coverage limits, and access methods into one place makes that divided system easier to use.
What the Directory Provides
- Pages by angle: the street directory, city directories, and a resident lookup
- Official custodians: the assessor, County Clerk, election officials, court clerks, Vital Registration, library, and archives
- Practical methods: ways to follow a deed chain, read an old entry, or compare a household across several dates
- Access boundaries: what West Virginia law opens, what remains restricted, and when a focused records request is needed
